Huawei Harmony OS: Overview

Huawei’s Harmony OS brings a cross-device operating system that is claiming to be faster than Android. It aims to provide consumers access to an OS that would not only be available for mobile devices but will also be compatible with cars, smart TV, and all types of sensors.

The 1+8+N approach

The three-tier approach represents the connectivity Huawei aims to achieve through Harmony OS.  “1” stands for the phone.”8″ stands for tablets smart watches, desktops, smart speakers, et cetera.”N” represents the less commonly known internet of things category which includes products like smart lighting, cameras, fridges, and a lot more.

Meeting demand for IoT Devices

With the rise of IoT devices which store very less memory for functioning than the best smartphones out there. There is a call for a more proactive and time-saving operating system that needs more coding. Now, Harmony OS completely changes the dynamics here by offering one line of code which equates to 100 lines of android codes.

As unbelievable as it sounds, Harmony OS is still able to offer exceptional services across an array of devices. Thereby, creating an ecosystem where different devices are connected. This creates a space where one app could perform on a smartphone, smartwatch, speaker, or a car head unit.

While other companies have tried doing this before they haven’t had been successful but with Huawei, there definitely seems to be a silver lining.

Simply way faster

Ensuring inter-device connectivity of the sort never seen before Huawei’s newly released Operating system is also going to be way faster than Android or other OS systems simply meeting the urgent demands of today this would make heavy gameplay whilst a trench of background apps an almost menial task.

Being a universal operating system

Alongside being available to multiple devices, Harmony OS is also moving forward with becoming a readily available open-source system. This means that any smartphone manufacturer in the world can adopt this operating system. Additionally, Huawei is pushing for app developers to work on creating an app for Harmony OS which would make the operating system available under the open-source market readily available for consumers.

Innovative yet unlikely to compete today

While Harmony OS is going to present a new front for consumers, it would not have the variety that android offers. Many users are reliant on these specific Android apps so their unavailability is going to be a major deterrent for the consumers of today and those of the near future. However, with time, Huawei is bound to produce more alternatives so that is bound to get a lot of attention.

A tough sell for US-based companies

With the security scandal last year between Huawei and the US and what resulted in an aftermath of a ban on Huawei. It is very likely the US market might not be as accepting of Huawei’s Harmony OS as they were before. The volatile political situation with the Chinese based company coupled with Android’s massive influence tapping today’s market, it is unlikely that US-based companies would open market to another, foreign  Operating system.

The road ahead for Harmony OS

As it stands, not much can be said about the future of Harmony OS. With android already in a strong lead as an established OS, it is going to take Harmony OS some time to come with original apps that could rival those available on Android whilst maintaining a positive relationship with Google and its consumers. It is a known precedent that Android apps will not be available for Harmony OS users so that is going to be a major challenge for Huawei to overcome.
